What Is Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy?
Bioidentical hormones are compounds that exactly match the natural hormones your body makes when it is (or was) in balance. Bioidentical Hormone Therapy (BHRT) can be used to treat men and women when their hormone levels drop or become unbalanced.
BHRT vs Traditional Hormones
Bioidentical hormones are different from those used in traditional hormone replacement therapy (HRT) in that they’re identical chemically to those our bodies produce naturally and are made from plant estrogens. The hormones used in traditional HRT are made from the urine of pregnant horses and other synthetic hormones.
Benefits Of BHRT
BHRT is typically used as people age and hormone levels drop, particularly for women who are in perimenopause or menopause. It’s used to increase the levels of the hormones that have dropped and improve moderate to severe menopause symptoms. See below for a full list of what BHRT can help you improve.
Symptoms BHRT Can Help Treat
- Insulin resistance
- Adrenal and thyroid disorders
- Ease symptoms of perimenopause and menopause
- Improve symptoms of cancer treatment
- Fibromyalgia
- Osteoporosis
What To Expect From Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy?
Will I Need Lab & Blood Tests?
YES – We calculate the dosing of your BioIdentical Hormone mixture based on your unique hormone levels. To be truly BioIdentical, we will check your levels to make sure they are in balance. We use saliva tests and finger stick capillary blood tests from ZRT Laboratories to measure your hormone levels. We may include other blood tests from local labs for additional testing if necessary.
Why use BHRT Pellets and Creams?
When hormones are absorbed rather than swallowed, they go directly to the tissues and are not altered by the liver. This is called the “first-pass effect.” Bypassing the gastrointestinal system also avoids many possible side effects. We can use creams, gels, or pellets as a convenient and measurable way to provide your hormone replacement.
Are Bioidentical Hormones Safer Than Other Hormones?
There are no studies to prove that Bioidentical Hormones are safer than standard hormone replacement pills. However quite literally, hundreds of thousands of women and men, have been treated successfully with little, if any, side effects.
Are Bioidentical Hormones Safe for Everyone?
Certain women should not undergo hormone replacement therapy of any type. If you have a personal history of breast cancer or stroke, or if you have a blood clot, you are not considered a viable candidate for BHRT Bioidentical Therapy – OR until detailed, updated studies of your medical history have been reviewed by our Physicians, and Labs proper have been performed.
Has BHRT Been Approved by the FDA?
BHRT is not a new approach to hormone replacement. It has been used since the 1930s. Bioidentical Hormones are 100% legal to prescribe and use in the US. The lack of FDA approval is simply because there are no official placebo-controlled studies to prove whether BHRT Bioidentical Hormones are safer than standard hormone replacement therapy, as per typical, the FDA has not yet given any specific approvals.
Will my Insurance Cover Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy?
Insurance companies Do Not Pay for BHRT Bioidentical Hormone Therapy, anywhere, again because it is not as yet FDA approved.
BHRT: Results and Recovery Time
Most will see marked improvement, typically within the first 2 to 3 weeks of therapy. However, in some patients, depending on each person’s physiology, it may take up to 6 or 8 weeks to realize the full BHRT results. At Kumar Aesthetics Institute, we want our patients to achieve balance with the lowest dose of each hormone.
Adrenal Fatigue – What is it, and how Does it Impact my Hormone Levels?
Fatigue, foggy mind, poor sleep, and weight gain are common symptoms of Adrenal Fatigue. The adrenal gland produces Cortisol, which controls our stress response. During times of high stress, whether short or long-term, your ability to produce the proper levels of cortisol can be affected. Sound nutrition, exercise, and short-term Cortisol supplementation can safely and effectively, reverse this condition.
