Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure in which an aesthetician or doctor uses a dermapen or roller to create microscopic puncture wounds in the epidermis in an attempt to stimulate collagen production. The procedure aims to repair skin cells and reveal smoother and plumper skin.
The Microneedling market in the United States was valued at $205.4 million in 2019 and shows no signs of slowing down for the next five years. And for a good reason – it is a highly effective procedure. A visit to almost any reviews page will reveal mostly positive feedback. But what isn’t discussed much is the aftercare. The fact that you will have tiny punctures in your skin means that aftercare is crucial.
At Kumar Aesthetics Institute, we are proud to offer you an array of medical aesthetic services, including Microneedling. Our staff is highly trained in the area of medical aesthetics and can answer any questions you may have. In this article, we share tips on how you should care for your skin after Microneedling.
What Are the Benefits of Microneedling?
Microneedling may be deemed a multipurpose technique as it is used to address the following skin concerns:
- Fine lines
- Rough texture
- Acne scars
- Enlarged pores
- Hyperpigmentation
- Age spots
- Stretch marks
What Should You Expect After the Procedure?
As a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure, you will require some downtime. Thankfully it is short. Within two days, you can expect that there will be side effects, such as flushed or bright red skin and swelling that takes about 48 hours to fade. You may also experience dry skin, peeling, and breakouts. While you wait for the side effects to dissipate, you can use gentle cleansers and moisturizers.
What Are Some Aftercare Tips?
It is important that you take precautions even after your downtime has passed. Your aesthetician or doctor will advise you to do the following:
Avoid Prolonged Sun Exposure
Spending time outdoors within the first two weeks after Microneedling is a huge no-no. Avoid the sun as much as possible. If you are going outside for a bit, wear sunscreen with SPF between 15 and 30.
Protect Your Skin from Infections
This is a general rule, but it is more crucial when your skin is in such a vulnerable state. Ensure that you do the following to avoid infection:
- Use the prescribed antibiotic cream as directed by your doctor
- Wash your hands immediately before touching your face
- Refrain from using makeup during the first 24 hours after the appointment
- Avoid the sea or a swimming pool within 72 hours of getting Microneedling
- Don’t engage in any activities that will make you sweat during the first 72 hours after the appointment
- Avoid retinol, glycolic acid, alpha hydroxy acids, vitamin C, or any exfoliants or scented products within the first two days after Microneedling. With your doctor’s approval, you may gradually reintroduce them into your skincare routine after the two days have passed.
